Synthesis of benzo analogs of oxoarcyriaflavins and caulersine

In the course of a program aimed at designing new antitumor agents, we were interested in the synthesis of mixed structures of maleimidophenyl carbazoles and natural product caulersine as potential CDK inhibitors. This was performed through an efficient four-step sequence starting from indole or 3-formyl-N-Boc indole. 5H-Benzocycloheptaindol-6-one derivatives equipped with a fused maleimide (oxophenylarcyriaflavins) or a methyl ester (benzo analog of caulersine) on the central tropone ring were thus obtained.     

A computer assistant for vehicle dispatching with learning capabilities

In this paper, we describe an expert consulting system for a dispatcher working in a courier service company. The system integrates interactive-graphic features and a learning module to support the dispatcher in his(her) task, and to suggest appropriate decisions when new requests come in. An experiment with a professional dispatcher is also reported.     

Invariants of real rational symplectic 4-manifolds and lower bounds in real enumerative geometry

Following the approach of Gromov and Witten, we construct invariants under deformation of real rational symplectic 4-manifolds. These invariants provide lower bounds for the number of real rational J-holomorphic curves in a given homology class passing through a given real configuration of points. RSOS Models and Jantzen–Seitz Representations of Hecke Algebras at Roots of Unity

A special family of partitions occurs in two apparently unrelated contexts: the evaluation of one-dimensional configuration sums of certain RSOS models, and the modular representation theory of symmetric groups or their Hecke algebras H_m. We provide an explanation of this coincidence by showing how the irreducible H_m-modules which remain irreducible under restriction to H_{m_1} (Jantzen–Seitz modules) can be determined from the decomposition of a tensor product of representations sl_n.     

Theoretical and electrochemical studies on organometallic symmetrical schiff base complexes of Zn(II), Cu(II), Ni(II) and Co(II)

The electronic communication between two redox centres through a Schiff base complex has been investigated in a series of ethylenediimine-bis(1-ferrocenyl-1,3-butanedionate) complexes of Zn(II) 1, Cu(II) 2, Ni(II) 3 and Co(II) 4. Cyclic voltammetry experiments of 1 and 2 exhibit a unique two-electron reversible oxidation wave, whereas in the case of 3 and 4 two and three one-electron oxidation processes are, respectively, observed. These results suggest some electronic interaction between the iron atoms of the ferrocenyl groups. DFT calculations carried out on model complexes show that for all the studied compounds the removal of the first two electrons corresponds to the oxidation processes of the iron centres in the weakly coupled ferrocenyl termini. The electronic communication between the two iron centres increases on going from 1 to 4. Finally, a re-indexation of the bands observed in the UV-Visible spectra has been carried out using TDDFT calculations.     

Structural insights into aluminum chlorofluoride (ACF)

The structure of the very strong solid Lewis acid aluminum chlorofluoride (ACF, AlCl(x)F(3-x), x = 0.05-0.3) was studied by IR, ESR, Cl K XANES, (19)F MAS NMR, and (27)Al SATRAS NMR spectroscopic methods and compared with amorphous aluminum fluoride conventionally prepared by dehydration of alpha-AlF(3) x 3H(2)O. The thermal behavior of both compounds was investigated by DTA and XRD. In comparison to ACF, amorphous AlF(3) prepared in a conventional way is not catalytically active for the isomerization reaction of 1,2-dibromohexafluoropropane, which requires a very strong Lewis acid. Both compounds are mainly built up of corner-sharing AlF(6) octahedra forming a random network. The degree of disorder in ACF is higher than in amorphous AlF(3). Terminal fluorine atoms were detected in ACF by (19)F NMR. The chlorine in ACF does not exist as a separate, crystalline AlCl(3) phase. Additionally, chlorine-containing radicals, remaining from the synthesis, are trapped in cavities of ACF. These radicals are stable at room temperature but do not take part in the catalytic reaction.     

Structural features and protonation site of epibatidine in the gas phase: an investigation through infrared multiphoton dissociation spectroscopy and computational chemistry

The gas phase structures of epibatidine, one of the most potent agonists of nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (nAChRs), are determined by means of infrared multiphoton dissociation (IRMPD) spectroscopy and quantum chemistry calculations. Comparison of the experimental and theoretical spectra provides evidence that about 15% of epibatidine is protonated on the Nsp(2) nitrogen in the gas phase. In contrast, the computational study of deschloroepibatidine shows that in the gas phase, the molecule is present only protonated on the Nsp(2) nitrogen. The main minima of the Nsp(2) protonated forms of the two molecules are strongly stabilized by intramolecular CH···Nsp(3) hydrogen bonds. The fundamental insights obtained in the present study on these two important nAChRs agonists show how subtle chemical modifications can have a deep impact on important physicochemical properties.     

Development of miniaturized pH biosensors based on electrosynthesized polymer films

A new type of pH biosensor was developed for biological applications. This biosensor was fabricated using silicon microsystem technology and consists in two platinum microelectrodes. The first microelectrode was coated by an electrosynthesized polymer and acted as the pH sensitive electrode when the second one was coated by a silver layer and was used as the reference electrode. Then, this potentiometric pH miniaturized biosensor based on electrosynthesized polypyrrole or electrosynthesized linear polyethylenimine films was tested. The potentiometric responses appeared reversible and linear to pH changes in the range from pH 4 to 9. More, the responses were fast (less than 1 min for all sensors), they were stable in time since PPy/PEI films were stable during more than 30 days, and no interference was observed. The influence of the polymer thickness was also studied.     

New dirhenium(III) compounds bridged by carboxylate ligands: N(C(4)H(9))(4)[Re(2)(OOCCF(3))Cl(6)] and Re(2)(OOCCCHCo(2)(CO)(6))(4)Cl(2)

The solvothermal reaction of (N(C(4)H(9))(4))(2)[Re(2)Cl(8)] with trifluoroacetic acid and acetic anhydride leads to the new rhenium trifluoroacetate dimer N(C(4)H(9))(4)[Re(2)(OOCCF(3))Cl(6)] (1) and to the rhenium carbonyl dimer Re(2)(mu(2)-Cl)(2)(CO)(8) as the rhenium-reduced byproduct. The reaction of the precursor complex, N(C(4)H(9))(4)[Re(2)(OOCCF(3))Cl(6)] (1), with the organometallic carboxylic acid (CO)(6)Co(2)HCCCOOH leads to the cluster of clusters compound Re(2)(OOCCCHCo(2)(CO)(6))(4)Cl(2) (2), which has the dimer structure of Re(2)(OOCR)(4)Cl(2). Cyclic voltammetric measurements show that Re(2)(OOCCCHCo(2)(CO)(6))(4)Cl(2) (2) has one reduction centered on the dirhenium core and a reduction centered on the cobalt atoms. DFT calculations have been used to rationalize the observed displacements of the voltammetric signals in Re(2)(OOCCCHCo(2)(CO)(6))(4)Cl(2) (2) compared to the parent ligand (CO)(6)Co(2)HCCCOOH and rhenium pivalate.
